When gas-welding aluminum, the flux is melted by the heat of the flame. This melting gives off an orange glow so intense that conventional gas-welding lenses cannot filter it completely, causing impaired vision. You must see the base-metal pool clearly while it forms and while you're making the weld. This means being able to see the tip of the flame clearly - the point of highest intensity of the bright orange/yellow glow. Otherwise your ability to gas-weld aluminum is handicapped. You will pop holes, deposit too much rod, or make an unreliable and unattractive weld.
